Sterilizing substrate: the oven method, step by step

  1. Spread the soil in a thin, even layer across a baking tray.
  2. Preheat the oven to roughly 200°C (400°F).
  3. Bake for about 20 minutes, stirring halfway through so heat reaches all of it evenly.
  4. Turn off the oven and let the tray cool completely before handling. Hot soil in a sealed jar traps steam and can cook the container’s seal or crack cold glass on contact.
  5. Do not be alarmed if small white particles appear that were not visible before. These are typically the remains of insects, mites, or larvae that the heat has killed; their protein content turns white when cooked. This is a sign the method worked, not a new problem.
