Terrarium Hardscape: Wood and Stone That Won’t Rot
The short answer on wood: cork bark is the safest choice in a sealed container, because it does not rot in sustained humidity and resists mold better than anything else commonly used. Driftwood, spiderwood, mopani, dragon wood and ghostwood are all workable. Fresh branches from outside are the single most reliable way to grow mold in a new build. Stone is mostly a non-issue as long as it is not crushing the glass or holding rot underneath it.
The longer answer matters because a sealed jar is a harsher environment for wood than the containers most hardscape advice is written for.
What hardscape is actually doing in a sealed jar
Hardscape is the non-living structure in the build: wood, bark, stone. It does three jobs.
It creates visual depth, which is the reason most people put it in. It creates height and surface, giving moss and small plants something to grow against instead of a flat plane of substrate. And it buffers moisture slightly, since porous materials like cork and driftwood take up water when the air is saturated and release it back as the air dries.
That third function is real but modest. Hardscape is not a humidity control system, and choosing a piece of wood in the hope that it will fix a wet build is the wrong tool for that problem. The drainage layer and the substrate mix do that work.

Why most wood guides are written for the wrong container
Search for terrarium wood and a large share of the results are written by reptile and amphibian keepers. Their wood lists are excellent, and they are written about a vivarium: a large enclosure, usually with a screen top or vents, often with an animal in it, and with meaningful airflow across the surface of everything inside.
A sealed 4 liter jar has none of that. There is no airflow. The interior sits near saturation continuously. Wood in that environment stays wet in a way the same piece would not in a ventilated enclosure, and it never gets the periodic drying that keeps surface growth in check.
The practical consequence is that the tolerance bands shift. A wood described as “generally fine with good ventilation” is not automatically fine in a sealed jar, and a piece that is marginal in a vivarium is a poor bet in a closed terrarium. When in doubt, go one step more conservative than a vivarium guide recommends.
Wood that holds up
Cork bark is the standout and is worth naming first. It comes from the bark of the cork oak, it does not rot in sustained high humidity, and it is naturally resistant to mold. It is also light, which matters in a small glass container, and it comes in both flat pieces and rounds, so it can be used as a back wall, a ledge, or a hollow feature. If you want one material that will not cause you trouble, this is it.
Driftwood has a strong practical argument in its favor: it has already spent months or years in water and survived. The soluble sugars that feed mold have largely leached out, and what remains is dense and stable. It is the second safest common choice.
Spiderwood, mopani, dragon wood and ghostwood are all named repeatedly across hobby sources as moisture resistant and stable in humid enclosures. Spiderwood in particular suits small builds because its branching shape creates structure without much mass.
A note on all of them. No wood is inert. Every piece carries some organic content and some spores, and any of these can show a bloom in the first weeks of a new sealed build. Choosing a resistant wood lowers the odds and shortens the episode. It does not eliminate it.
Wood to leave out
Fresh branches from a garden or a park. This is the most common mistake and the most reliable cause of trouble. Green or recently fallen wood is full of natural sugars, which is exactly what mold feeds on, and it also brings in whatever was living on and in it. In a sealed container with no airflow, that combination is close to a worst case. Collecting is not automatically off limits, but a fresh branch requires far more preparation than most people give it, and even then it is a gamble a beginner does not need to take.
Resinous softwoods, such as pine and other conifers. The resins are slow to leave the wood and are not well suited to a closed planted environment.
Anything treated, painted, stained, or sold as decor. Wood from a craft or homeware store may carry finishes, preservatives or dyes that were never intended to sit in a sealed humid container with living plants. If the provenance is unknown, leave it out.
Wood that is already breaking down. Soft, crumbling, or spongy pieces are past the point where they will hold up. They will continue decomposing inside the jar, and they will do it faster there than they were doing it outside.
Stone, in one honest section
Stone gets far more words in most guides than it needs.
Most stone is inert and will do nothing at all in a terrarium, which is the desired behavior. Slate, granite, quartz, river stone and lava rock are all commonly used without incident. Lava rock is worth a mention for being unusually light for its volume and highly porous, which makes it easy to seat and pleasant for moss to colonize.
Three things actually matter:
- Weight against glass. A heavy stone dropped or wedged against the wall of a jar is a genuine risk to the container. Seat stone deliberately, on the substrate, not braced against the glass.
- Porosity and trapped organic matter. A very porous stone sitting directly on damp substrate can hold decaying material underneath it where you cannot see it. This is not a reason to avoid porous stone, only a reason to lift it and look if a smell develops.
- Calcareous stone. Limestone, marble and similar stones can slowly release minerals into the water they sit in. In a planted aquarium this is a real consideration. In a small sealed terrarium the effect is minor and slow, but there is no advantage to it either, so if a non-calcareous stone is available it is the simpler choice.
Preparing hardscape before it goes in
Two methods are standard across hobby sources, and both have a failure mode worth stating before the method.
Boiling. Submerge the piece and boil for around an hour. This kills surface organisms and leaches out some soluble sugars, and it also waterlogs the wood so it sinks rather than shifting. The hazard is thermal shock: never pour boiling water into a cold glass jar, and never put a hot, wet piece of hardscape straight against cold glass. Let everything come back to room temperature first. Glass fails suddenly under a sharp temperature difference, and it fails with edges.
Baking. A low oven, commonly cited around 200F, for one to two hours. The hazard here is obvious and still gets skipped in the guides that recommend it: dry organic material in a heated oven is a fire risk. Do not leave it unattended, do not turn the temperature up to save time, and do not bake a piece that is coated in anything you cannot identify.
Both temperatures and times above are the ranges hobby sources commonly recommend, not measured results. Cork bark in particular often needs neither treatment, since it is naturally resistant, and a rinse and a visual check is a defensible approach for a clean piece.

White fuzz on new wood in week one
This is common enough to be considered normal, and it alarms nearly every first-time builder.
A new sealed build very often develops a white, fine, cobweb-like growth on wood within the first days to weeks. In most cases it is surface growth feeding on residual sugars in the wood, it does not spread to the plants, and it recedes on its own as the sugars are used up and the system settles. If a cleanup crew is present, it typically disappears faster.
What is not routine: growth spreading onto leaves, growth that is dark or slimy rather than white and fine, or growth accompanied by a sour or drain-like smell when the lid is opened. Those point somewhere else, and the mold and condensation guide covers the distinction and the response.
The instinct to tear the wood out at the first sign of white fuzz usually causes more disruption than the fuzz would have.
Seating it so it does not rot from the bottom
Placement changes how long a piece lasts.
A piece buried in the substrate sits in the wettest part of the build, permanently, with no chance to dry even slightly. The same piece resting on the surface, or bridged between two points so air can reach underneath, lasts considerably longer. Where a piece needs to look partly buried, seating it into the top of the substrate rather than sinking it into the middle achieves the look without putting the bulk of the wood in the wet zone.
Angle matters too. Wood that traps a pocket of water in a hollow will hold that water, and in a sealed jar it will hold it indefinitely. Orient hollows to drain rather than to collect.

FAQ
Can I use a branch from outside?
It can be done, but it is the highest-risk option on the list, and fresh wood is a leading cause of mold in new builds. Wood that has been dead, dry and off the ground for a long time is a better candidate than a recently fallen branch, and it still needs full preparation.
Is white fuzz on my driftwood dangerous?
Usually not. Fine white growth on new wood in the first weeks is common and typically recedes as the build settles. Growth spreading onto leaves, or a bad smell, is a different matter.
Do I have to boil or bake cork bark?
Cork is naturally resistant to rot and mold, so a rinse and a careful look is a reasonable approach for a clean piece. Preparation does no harm if you prefer the certainty.
Will limestone or marble hurt the build?
Not dramatically. Calcareous stone can slowly release minerals into the moisture it sits in, and the effect in a small sealed terrarium is minor. If a non-calcareous stone is available, it is the simpler choice.
